Do you ever find yourself wanting something really badly, but you can’t have it because your past choices have shut down that option ?
Ever since I was very little I’ve always wanted to travel and live in Europe, but I became a Mum before I had the chance to do so. One day when my girls were young and we were having an afternoon at the beach, I remember looking up from the sand castles we were making to the horizon. I suddenly felt hemmed in and trapped by the ocean that extended as far as I could see. I was living on an island and couldn’t go anywhere. I loved my daughters very much, but at that moment I desperately wished that my life was different. For the first time ever I understood how my choices in the past were defining what I could or couldn’t do in the present.
It’s foolishness to pretend your past choices don’t affect your present options. You are where you are in your life because of every choice you made in the past.
If you train as a lawyer, you can’t work as a doctor and if you have limited education or career experience, your job opportunities will be different from someone who has the skills you lack. If you spend your money on clothes, handbags, weekends away and expensive wine every night, you might have to forego big ticket items such as buying an apartment, traveling for six months or taking time out to retrain or create a new business.
The problem is that we rarely think through the consequences of many of our everyday choices. We respond to situations we find ourselves in, trying to meet our immediate needs to be liked or feel good about ourselves without thinking how our choices will affect us in the longer term.
You cannot undo the past, but you can choose a different future if you follow these five steps
The great news is that while your past choices have created your present situation, they don’t have to define your future.
You get to choose your life.
I’d love to hear about the good and the bad choices you’ve made in your life. What were the good choices and how have they made your life great?
Have a great day everyone….
