Have you ever had a dream that seemed outlandish and completely beyond your ability to achieve? How did you deal with such a dream? Did you work to achieve it or did you discard it because it seemed impossible? I’ve discarded many of my dreams, and in fact, my life feels littered with abandoned dreams. But I’m learning that abandoning your dreams comes at a very high cost.
I’m beginning to realize that when I abandon a dream, I’m actually discarding a little bit of me.
Dreams are the foundation of a meaningful life, so don’t throw them away. You cannot create something new or better without first dreaming of it or imagining it. Our dreams show us who we really are and who we can be. Dreams show us how we can make the world a better place. These days, I take my dreams seriously and I do that is by treating them in the same way I treated my children when they were babies and growing up. Today I care for my dreams and ensure I give them everything they need to thrive.
Earlier this year I spent 6 months in London looking after my two grandchildren when my daughter returned to work after maternity leave. I’d forgotten how much attention and food small children need. In addition to three main meals, they needed a steady supply of snacks at regular intervals. I quickly discovered that without a continuous stream of food, my grandchildren struggled to cope with the ups and downs of the day – and so did I!
Just as our babies are born needing to be loved, cared for and fed, so too are our dreams.
Dreams rarely arrive fully formed. They require love, care and nourishment to bring them to maturity.
So how do you feed and nourish a dream?
Feeding and growing your dreams in these 4 ways will strengthen your desire to achieve them. Sometimes you will be frustrated because things are moving very slowly, but just as you don’t expect a small child to become an adult overnight, neither can you expect dreams to suddenly become reality. They will grow and develop as you work to bring them to life.
If a dream seems impossible right now, focus on one thing you can do today that will take you a step closer to achieving your dream. It doesn’t matter how small your action is, by doing it you’re affirming to the Universe your commitment.
Your dreams are your children, so love and care for them appropriately and let them grow in their own good time.
I’d love to hear from you about your dreams. What do you dream of achieving and what are the barriers you are facing? What are you doing today to feed and love your dream. Please feel free to leave a comment.
