Do you dream of living somewhere different, preferably bigger and better or exciting? Or having a different job or a more supportive manager? Perhaps you dream of having a super-duper bank account, or a different partner or being able to lie on the beach day after day after day while someone brings you mojitos whenever you snap your fingers?
For many years, I felt frustrated and dreamed of a different life. I wasn’t desperately unhappy but I’d dream of the time when my children were older, or I earned more, or my partner would stopped doing those things that annoyed me. I just knew that then life would be great. Of course I dreamed of having a big bank account which would solve pretty much everything.
If you have those sort of dreams, they are about escape. Those dreams focus on removing the struggles you’re encountering in your current situation. They’re not related to creating a meaningful life that makes you feel great. Dreams of escape are fantasies, not aspirations. They will not make you happy.
I discovered that as soon as I got what I wanted (I never got the big bank account by the way!), I’d needed to change or get something else. I was never satisfied because the things I wanted to change in my life were not the problem.
The problem was that I’d given up my real dreams and replaced them with wishful thinking. If you honestly want to create a satisfying life, you have to unearth the dreams you had as a child and reconnect with the aspirations you had during high school. What did you long to do with your life when you were a teenager? What were your hopes and ambitions? Have created a life that enables you to achieve those aspirations and dreams or have you discounted them as being unrealistic and too difficult to achieve?
Our true dreams point the way towards our own personal fulfillment. You will only achieve a meaningful life if you reactivate your true dreams and start making them come true.
In the meantime, start paying attention to the things you dream about now.
Are your dreams wishful thinking focused on removing the irritations of the present or are they grounded in who you are and what you really want out of your life?
I’d love to hear from you about your dreams and ambitions for your life. Are you starting to achieve some of them or have you abandoned them because the seemed too difficult.
